Commerzbank

Commerzbank is one of Germany's largest banks, focused on retail customers and the country's vast base of mid-sized Mittelstand companies. After years of restructuring and a partial state rescue during the financial crisis, higher interest rates have restored its profitability and turned it into one of the sector's clearer turnaround stories. The dividend, suspended for much of the past decade, returned in 2022 and is now rising alongside growing share buybacks as the bank hands back surplus capital. Interest from Italy's UniCredit, which has built a large stake, adds a takeover angle. The income stream is young and still tied to the rate cycle, so it is best seen as a recovering payer rather than an established one.
